Each Sunburn Matters: Childhood UV Exposure Strongly Tied to Melanoma Risk

As part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting a powerful new study that emphasizes just how critical childhood sun protection truly is.

According to research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, each blistering sunburn before age 15 increases a person’s lifetime risk of developing melanoma skin cancer by approximately 3%. What’s especially concerning is that this risk remains regardless of skin tone, eye or hair color, or time spent outdoors—reminding us that no child is immune to UV damage.

This study reinforces the urgent need for early and consistent sun safety habits, including daily sunscreen use, protective clothing, and regular skin checks by a board-certified dermatologist.

Whether you’re a parent, a caregiver, or someone managing your own skin health, now is the time to be proactive. Learn more about this research and why early sunburn prevention can have a lasting impact on your health.
